Ottawa, ON –
Financial literacy can be defined as “having the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make responsible financial decisions” (Task Force on Financial Literacy, 2011). Launched in November 2012, the Financial Literacy Action Network Ottawa (FLANO) brings together a multitude of organizations and individuals from various sectors in the community involved or interested in improving financial literacy of Ottawa residents.
“The proclamation of the Mayor of Ottawa fits perfectly in the community support for better access to all forms of financial empowerment services, as seen in the Financial Security priorities of the poverty reduction strategy adopted last year by the City”, said Marc d’Orgeville, Executive Director of the EBO Financial Education Centre and current Chair of FLANO.
Today, to mark the Mayor’s proclamation and as part of the numerous events in November for Financial Literacy Month in Canada, FLANO is offering online workshops in English then French facilitated by Connected Canadians. Specifically designed to help anyone to protect themselves against phishing scams, particularly older adults, those workshops are one example of numerous financial empowerment interventions available in Ottawa that support healthy levels of financial literacy to thrive in our complex world.
Executive members of FLANO will gather tomorrow to celebrate and receive the proclamation at Ottawa City Hall, during an event organized by the Canadian Centre for Women Empowerment (CCFWE). “We were thrilled to have CCFWE join FLANO last year. They are at the forefront of embedding Financial Empowerment interventions in community support. They are the perfect example of financial empowerment being more efficient when culturally relevant to the targeted populations and delivered by community organizations who know best those populations”, added Marc d’Orgeville.
